چکیده

It has long been hypothesized that urban areas exert a direct influence on precipitation patterns in their immediate surroundings (Horton, 1921). Early studies focused on this influence through the use of point-observation comparisons of urban and rural areas to quantify the anthropogenic effects on precipitation (AEP) (Changnon Jr., 1968, Huff and Changnon Jr., 1973, Huff and Schickedanz, 1974). Most, if not all, early studies suffered from inherent spatial and temporal errors due to the sampling methods used as they were unable to adequately measure convective precipitation (Lowry, 1998). Studies during the 1990s began to utilize higher resolution sampling techniques, which included lightning data (Westcott, 1995), satellite-based radar data (Shepherd et al., 2007), and, ground-based radar data (Mote et al., 2007). Ground-based radar provides the most appropriate data for the study of AEP due to the superior spatial (1° x 1 km) and temporal (approximately five minutes) resolution.

Regional-scale transport of air pollutants: impacts of Southern California emissions on Phoenix ground-level ozone concentrations

In this study, WRF-Chem is utilized at high resolution (1.333 km grid spacing for the innermost domain) to investigate impacts of southern California anthropogenic emissions (SoCal) on Phoenix ground-level ozone concentrations ([O3]) for a pair of recent exceedance episodes. First, WRFChem control simulations, based on the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2005 National Emissions Invento...

Anthropogenic Impacts on Summer Precipitation in Central Arizona, U.S.A

This article explores the possibility of urbanizationand irrigation-induced increases in summer precipitation totals in central Arizona. Maximum precipitation impacts are hypothesized to occur downwind of the Phoenix area in the Lower Verde basin. Results from statistical tests indicate that summer precipitation totals in the Lower Verde basin are greater than totals in nearby basins. Precipita...

Urban Modifications in a Mesoscale Meteorological Model and the Effects on near Surface Variables in an Arid Metropolitan Region

A refined land cover classification for the arid Phoenix (Arizona, USA) metropolitan area and some simple modifications to the surface energetics were introduced in the fifth-generation PSU/NCAR mesoscale meteorological model MM5. The single urban category in the existing 24-category United States Geological Survey (USGS) land cover classification used in MM5 was divided into three classes to a...

Urbanization alters spatiotemporal patterns of ecosystem primary production: A case study of the Phoenix metropolitan region, USA

Previous studies have found that urbanization often decreases net primary production (NPP), an important integrative measure of ecosystem functioning. In arid environments, however, urbanization may boost productivity by introducing highly productive plant communities and weakening the coupling of plant growth to naturally occurring cycles of water and nutrients. We tested these ideas by compar...

Geostatistical assessment of Pb and the related soil physical and chemical properties in near-surface soil around Sepahanshahr, Isfahan

This paper presents a survey on soil Pb concentration around Sepahanshahr town located in vicinity of Isfahan. Due to the lack of regulation and environmental education and awareness, Sepahanshahr is now a rapid growing residential area suffering from the considerable consequences of poorly regulated mining activities operating in its vicinity. The aim of this study is to explore the spatial st...
